Americans Snapping Up More E-Readers than Tablets

The iPad may have sparked the wild demand in tablet computers, but it is the humble e-reader that has gained ground this May.

According to a May report released by the Pew Research Center, 12% of all U.S. adults own an e-reader while 8% of all adults own a tablet computer. This is a dramatic increase from last winter’s statistics, where 7% owned a tablet and 6% owned an e-reader.

Price is the biggest factor affecting the e-reader’s apparent lead over tablets. A brand-new Kindle comes at a relatively low price of $114, while even the cheapest tablet starts at $400 without a data plan subscription.

The study has a 2% margin of error, though, meaning that the real number of e-reader owners is anywhere around 10% to 14% all adults, with tablet owners floating around the 6% to 10% mark.

The lead of e-readers is still undeniable despite the low possibility of a “tie” at 10%.

The same study has also revealed other enlightening statistics about e-reader users – Hispanics, parents, students, college graduates, adults under the age of 65 and those earning less than $75,000 are most likely to own an e-reader.

Both the e-reader and the tablet, however, are still behind older technologies like cell phones, desktops, laptops, DVRs and MP3 music players, with cell phones topping the popularity list.

In another unrelated tablet's news, Amazon is gearing up to give its Kindle the tablet treatment. This much-anticipated Kindle tablet might be launched as early as August 2011, but whether it shall be yet another iPad knockoff is yet to be seen.

Review: Kindle Case with Light

Kindle Lighted Leather Cover

I was fortunate enough to receive a Kindle last month for my birthday, and have been loving it. However, those of you who already own one (which I would assume is most of you if you're reading this review) know that as cool of a device as it is, the Kindle was designed in such a manner that it really needs a cover.

When I started looking for cases for my Kindle, I found most of them to be lacking in one way or the other. Either they lacked certain features, were cheap looking and feeling, were not well-made, or were inexplicably ugly.

The first one I bought (by a well-known company, nonetheless) was cheaply made, and the stitching started coming out of it after only two weeks of admittedly heavy use.

However, upon the recommendation of a friend, I bought the burnt orange version of Kindle case with light a few weeks from http://www.kcases.org, and have been extremely impressed.

This cover solves all of the problems I either had with my last cover, or was worried about. The quality of the leather is very high, and the colors are uniform. This Kindle case feels much like carrying around a Moleskin notebook; quality all the way.

The lights works perfectly, and unlike with some other covers it fills the entire screen. While I see that one person had a problem with battery life related to the light, I haven't noticed any deterioration in battery life by using the light.

This cover is tough, too. I caught my Chihuahua (who for some reason likes to chew on both plastic and leather) trying to chew on the end of my Kindle when I left it on the coffee table. To my pleasant surpise, I only had to wipe the spit (yuck!) off the cover. He hadn't done any damage to it at all, which speaks to the high quality of the leather.

I would definitely give this case a good buy recommendation. Especially for those who like reading by the bed.
